This site is awesome, I spent hours reading before I got my girls.

I have 3 Reds and a BO, 12 weeks old. I have a coop from Tractor Supply but I also made a 72sq-ft run from chicken wire and PVC. It's strong because we have dogs, neighborhood cats and possums, and the possibility of raccoons foxes or coyote. It's a little heavy to use as a tractor but possible, maybe I'll do that later. I live near Turlock CA.

I look forward to being a regular visitor here.

Thanks for the great site!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. If you have predators in your area like the group you listed in your post, I would strongly recommend either replacing or covering that chicken wire with hardware cloth as those predators will tear right through chicken wire. We have many BYC members who sadly can testify from experience that all chicken wire is good for is keeping chickens in; not predators out. Hardware cloth is more expensive than chicken wire but it is cheaper than replacing your flock. There is a good article at http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2013/07/11-tips-for-predator-proofing-chickens.html on predator proofing your chickens. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in predator proofing your flock.

Michael is 100% right and I totally agree with him. Hardware cloth costs more because it lasts much longer and the peace of mind it can bring is priceless.

That's a lot of chickens to start with unless you have a lot of experience with them. And even with experience, you'll need help and other resources like enough property to keep them on, buildings to house them, food for them to eat.

I don't want to discourage you, I believe people should follow their dreams. You just have to know how much you can handle before jumping in the deep end of the pool.

I wish you luck!
