My boyfriend and I literally just got chickens. I'm honestly kind of scared of chickens, but I was raised in a more urban setting, so they're just very different for me.
Anyway, we have three hens, and thankfully have a friend running their own little chicken farm, so I'm not totally in the dark. He actually suggested I come here to learn more about them.

On top of the three hens, we also have four parakeets, two dogs, and six rabbits. So...hi from the city girl learning to play farmer! :)

Hi! Welcome to BYC! Be sure to write a thread anytime you have questions or concerns about your flock and I'm sure that someone will know the answer. No need to be afraid of them, chickens are usually very friendly or afraid of you themselves. We have two parakeets too and I think that there is even a thread on here for parakeets if you have any questions about them. :welcome

Welcome welcome. Your fears are understood! I desperately wanted chickens, and then when I went to pick them up and the farmer started catching and handing me pullets I was terrified! Haha. I'd had parakeets and parrots and worked with other birds, but not chickens. Something about their size was a bit intimidating I think, though it's hard to pinpoint why a fear is a fear, it's not exactly logical. But my experience with large birds (macaws) is such that if they aren't nice, they can seriously injure you, so I think some of the nervousness comes from that. Let me tell you though, they are just as nervous about you, it doesn't hurt if they peck you (especially if you have long pants or gloves on), and you will get used to each other and live happily ever after ;) and I think they are easier and less demanding than my indoor birds ever were, but everyone has a different relationship with their chickens. Good luck!

Also my husband grew up on a farm. He has a slightly different view of the chickens than I do, but he assures me that mine are very nice compared to others and he actually likes them. I'm sure you will find the same with a small backyard flock with some social interaction.

My boyfriend had some chickens when he was younger, and assured me their pecks didn't hurt too bad. I even had one of them eat some feed from my hand to see for myself.
But yeah, most of the fear just comes from not knowing much about them, and not being around them very often. So far, they're not as scary as I thought they would be, although I'm still a little skittish around them. I guess time will tell, though :)
