Hi, I'm new, please don't peck me too much
I'm on the east coast of Australia. We (me, DH, 4 kids) have had hens for years. Right now we have 2 aracauna crosses and... someone. She's black. Australorp maybe? They're a few years old, we love them, but they don't keep up with the kids' appetite for eggs. So, we needed more chooks.
Recently we stepped out into a whole new world, incubating eggs, and hurrah!
these little floofballs appeared on Sunday.
They're from a few different hens, I have no idea what kinds they were. Rooster is a Cornish. Would love to hear if any one has ideas about breeds/sexes. I have no clue.
Just to make things more complicated, I got offered some day-old sexed females, when we were halfway through incubating these guys. Well, I had to say yes, right? Just in case hatching our own didn't go well. Or in case we hatched a dozen roosters
So all up we have 3 adult hens, 3 (hopefully) females at 2 weeks old, and 9 teeny chickies. Eventually we're aiming for around 7-8 hens.
In the next few weeks I will need to care for these babies and figure out who is who. And build a bigger coop for when some of these little ones will join the big girls outside. If there's more girls than we can keep, we have good homes lined up. Boys... well, sorry, guys... we are not vegetarian. So... yeah. Another learning curve there for our family.
