Hey guys. so my husband found this little chick in the road by itself so we brought it home and i’m learning how to be a chicken mom. but i’ll post my other questions on another thread.

does anyone know how old, what breed, and what sex this little baby is? it’s adorable and i would love to keep it.

I'm not great with chicks....it looks kinda like a cream legbar, in which case it's a girl. Do you have a heat source for her? What are you doing for food and water? It's so nice of you to rescue her!!!

of course. i’m a lover of all animals!

i did kinda google some chicken breeds and what they may look like as chicks and i found a Welsummer & Speckled Sussex kinda look like what i have.

whatever it may be i would love for it to lay some eggs.

i went to my local feed and supply store and they gave me a heat lamp, bag of pine shavings, a feeder and waterer and the food which they gave me Purina Start & Grow Medicated Crumbles. I also read online they’re social animals so usually people have 3 or more at once but since we found it by it’s lonesome i only have the one. So i got it some non toxic cat toys. lol. it’s a few of these plastic balls with bells inside of them. i’ll show a picture of my set up under this

That's great!!!!!!!! If you have a kid safe/acrylic mirror, you could put it in there on one of the walls also. That looks like a great setup! The food should be good. What is the temperature under the heat lamp? The chick looks to be about 3 weeks old, so it should be around 85 degrees. Depending on your location, some hatcheries let you order a minimum of 3 chicks, so you could get her some friends. This also looks like it could be an easter egger chick, in which case you won't know gender for a while.

i have to wait to figure out the temp til i can get to my parents and get their temp gun. i was thinking about getting a small coop maybe for 2-3 chickens for size for this little fella but i’m stuck on that as well. i feel like i don’t know a lot about keeping chickens because every video or post i read has something else i’ve never heard of. lol and i honestly don’t mind what breed it is, just hoping for a female since we are not allowed to have roosters in my county.

This looks to me like a standard sized chick. Where are you located? Basically the only care is food, water, and cleaning. The pine shavings are great for bedding. When the bedding starts to look gross, you can take her out for a bit and replace the bedding. Make sure you hold your chick and give her lots of treats- scrambled egg works great. Unfortunately the lowest minimum you can get from most places is three chicks, so you'll need enough space for four. That means you need 16 square feet of coop space and 52 square feet of enclosed run space.
