I have a small 23 acre ranch /farm in Mendocino County California .Our family consists of myself (Dad) Mom and two great kids my daughter 9 yrs old and son 6yrs old ,a dog ,two cats, bunnies and about 1600 sq ft of raised beds of veggies and a 1500 soft greenhouse. We live fully off grid 11 miles from our small town deep in the redwoods, 12 miles by air from the coast.I am at the point wheremy kids and i are ready to start raising chickens for eggs, I am very interested in raising squab for meat, we are both very good cooks and eat very healthy including our neighbors 6000 acre cow ranch beef, and trout from our pond.
The area im planning is an outbuilding originally built to be a chicken barnraised on cement footer isolated with plywood on interior walls. Its a very well built buiding, split in half with two separate doors 16'x12x8''total size. My plan was to make a caged wall inside with door to enter into pens which would make each one roughly 8'x8'x8' . I'm hoping to raise 6 hens on one side and for the squab i was hoping for 24"x24" nesting boxes 8 on each side wall (2 rows of 4) giving each female two boxes to lay as the new squab matures .hopefully 8-10 females. The outside pen for chickens would be 16'x12'x8-10' sloped. The squab pen would be 12'x16'x10' .the pens and nesting area will be totally separate. How does this sound ?
Also does anyone have a few bunnies live with the chickens? my kids have to pet bunnies (lionheads ) that live outside in building .
Thanks
Ray
