(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I am new to chickens. I bought some in july of 2024. I went to tractor supply and got at least 1 of every type they had.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We had a total of 14 chickens—2 roosters and 12 hens. Unfortunately, due to the high winds in Southern California earlier this month, one of my roosters, a Rhode Island Red, passed away. He was tragically crushed between two heavy shower doors that were on the property. According to TS all the rhode Island chicks were suppose to be female but I was glad to have a larger rooster to protect the hens since they free range on my property during the day. R.I.P Berry
(3) What breeds do you have?
Going to be honest, I’m not 100% sure—these are my best guesses based on a Google image search:
I figured at some point they would return to wherever they came from, but honestly, would you leave a large, fenced-in, one-acre yard protected from predators? My German Shepherd keeps them safe—never even had to train him to protect other animals; it’s just instinct. Plus, the yard is full of fruit. According to my dad, they ate all the grapes LOL! I will admit I never saw a single grape on the brush but what ever.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They are so fun to watch and hang out with. I love their little personalities and, of course, the eggs!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Being an outdoors men, I love fishing
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I'm currently going to school for X-ray technology, but I'm also considering quitting and buying 90 more hens and selling eggs with these egg prices. I’m allowed to have up to 100 chickens on my property.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
Google search. I am just trying to learn alot more about these wonderful creatures.
Attached a recent photo now that they are laying eggs and photo when they were first put outside.

Going to be honest, I’m not 100% sure—these are my best guesses based on a Google image search:
- 1 Rhode Island Red hen (Cherry)
- 3 Buff Orpingtons hens (The Golden Girls)
- 1 Legbar hen (Ms. Gris)
- 2 Ancona or Venda hens ( Salt and Pepper, Salt has more white but its starting to get hard to tell them apart)
- 1 Columbian Wyandotte hen ( Ms. Bee)
- 1 Cochin (rooster) (Mr. Boots)
- 1 Black Ameraucana hen (Ms. Negra) (it's spanish for Black)
- 2 Black Australorp hens (not 100% sure, but they are skinnier and more athletic-looking than the Ameraucana) (Unnamed but with Ms. Gris they are the bad girls club***)
- 1 brown hen (I have no idea what breed she is) (Ms. Brown)
