Yes, I've seen many news reports from within the farms, where the hens are debeaked: it's terrible! You can see they're in so much pain.

Liz, good idea. You can feed your girls just about anything, except salty food, salt is poison to a chicken. I give ours leftover rice, cereal, stale bread, potato peels... they love it.
You could also ask at just about any shop who sells battery eggs who supplies them and get the number from them. Tell them you are after spent hens. Keep my updated! Getting my new girls soon, I hope. I'll let you know how it goes.
One of my hens just laid an egg in the washing basket, they are queing in there. Aren't chickens crazy?
