Hi there, since retiring to France I've taken up keeping chickens and it's fascinating. When Hilda went broody I bought her some fertilised eggs but (probably due to storms) they all went rotten. She was so miserable when she went back with her mate safter 24 days of carefully sitting on her nest and seemed to be looking for her babies so I found an advertisement for chicks and went and bought her 6 Marans and 6 'little red hens' aged from one to three days. She has accepted them happily and is a very good mum. Now I have to assemble another henhouse to accommodate the new arrivals when they're big enough to go outside.
