Hello Everyone!

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

You shouldn't keep roosters that are rough with hens, however they can be a bit clumsy at first when they are learning to mate. If he gets so rough he is hurting them or really damaging their feathers, you might want to separate him or rehome him.

Good luck with your flock and welcome to ours!

Welcome!

If he's just clumsy for the time being you could get some hen saddles. Some even have wing protectors. If he's just flat out mean or rough then I'd separate him for a while until you get the new hens.

Thanks, I got 8 new hens this week. 4 speckled Wyandottes 3 blue andalusins, and a amber white. My 3 rhode islands are really picking on the new chicks. How long will it take for them to get used to one another?

Do you have them separated? If not you may want to consider separating them so they can see each other but no contact. When they're of like size then try letting them integrate. It will take some time to figure out a pecking order so there will be a little bit of squabbling in the beginning.

Another thing you can try (worked for me) when integrating is sticking the new ones in your coop in the dark. In the am most should think they were always there.
