Yes! Ours also poop on our deck!Mine all appear to have too-small runs, too, but they spend most of the day outside -- socializing, foraging and pooping on the deck!
There's quite a learning curve to raising happy, healthy chickens, and I think most people have some regrets about their initial efforts. You can learn so much from this group -- often from our mistakes.
I protected my first girls from big predators and overhead predators, but left a coop open one night and a petite mink shimmied in through the livestock panel run and went on a killing spree. Hardware cloth is pricey, but it's worth the peace of mind. I had never seen a mink around here; had no idea they lived in this area. You likely have unseen predators, too, because just about everything in the world wants to eat your chickens.
It's great that you could responsibly rehome your rooster. I have one good boy, and one bad boy. Billy is such a jerk that I would feel awful pawning him off on someone else.
Welcome to BYC, where spoiling chickens is an admirable hobby!
I don't think we get many predators because of Gerry, our emu. Bryan (my husband) has been here for about 16+ years in Idaho, he used to live in California. I'm from the UK! haha! But he's raised an emu, and ducks here with no issues of anything coming in and killing anything and he has always had an open shed.
Our chickens I believe would be safe since we close the coop door and pen at night. I would never say we won't ever get predators but in the 16years of Bryan being here, he's not had any issues yet.
I'm happy too, he's the most friendliest rooster, and it's lovely how I can still see him every Sunday!
I hope I don't spoil my chickens too much! They always have feed, but I give them veggies every morning and evening, some lettuce, brocolli, etc. They get a few mealworm treats now and again too, but not too many as I know they're fattening.
Thank you so much too! I heard about this site, after the sand purchasing incident I thought it would be best if I joined! haha
