I was processing an injured bird tonight and just learned that chickens/quail bruise green? Anyway, I keep quail and I'm ALWAYS googling chickens for information as there are so FEW quail resources addressing the questions I have. Most of the forums online for quail are relatively new people like me. So here I am!
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I have coturnix quail, not chickens. It's really quite similar, but smaller and perfectly legit to keep in places where chicken-keeping is restricted by zoning. I wish my grandfather was still around. He was a chicken farmer. He could have taught me SO much!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? Usually we average about 70 quail. At this very moment we have 49 birds. There may be up to 30 more hatching tomorrow.
(3) What breeds do you have? Coturnix quail. Many variety of colors. Wild type. Tuxedo. Sparkle. Pansy Faye. Etc.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? I love working with the babies to train them through each phase until they are big enough to join our egg flocks. With the hens, I especially love the ones that get so excited when I bring them bug treats.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I keep other animals as well. We have a rather large garden setup. We make our own kraut, kombucha, ginger beer, and mozzarella. And I dance a lot.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. I have a bunch of snakes including ball pythons, boas, and 50 pound retics. Plus a gecko, tarantulas, a rather extensive bug city, and a cat. We're one big happy family.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I've been referring to articles from BYC for some time now because there is so much excellent information that applies to quail. Tonight I decided to join the facebook group and forums. I'm learning as much as I can, and this community is an excellent resource.
