Hello everyone! I'm getting into backyard chicken-ing in El Paso, Texas! I'm a newbie to it all!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Spent last summer chicken-sitting for my mom's backyard flock and we just got our own chicks on Friday (5 days in to the adventure!)

(2) How many chickens do you have right now? 4 Ameracauna chicks @about 3 weeks old.

(3) What breeds do you have? Only the Ameracauna for now, but keeping an eye out for other breeds available in the area, especially Rhode Island Reds.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I decided the best place to start was reading Modern Farmer's Raising Backyard Chickens for Dummies.
Highly entertaining!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies? I teach middle school English so BOOKS are a thing. My other hobbies include arguing with my 8 yr old lawyer and chasing behind my toddler picking Goldfish crackers off the floor.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
It's important to me that my kids grow up learning where food comes from, even in our urban environment. As a chef's "widow", we get lots of opportunities to try new things when my partner is experimenting with new dishes and farm-to-table ideas at home. The kids are very excited for our new "pets"...our current pets, a Pibble and Frenchie are not-so-excited but they'll get used to it! haha

Very nice introduction!

The hens will follow your toddler around too if gold fish crackers are being dropped!

G'Day from down under EPChick :frowWelcome and Congratulations! :clap

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out.

If you would like to share Pictures and Stories of your flock and/or other critters, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)

Including your general location on your profile will assist others. Location, climate, season etc can be important factors when members are responding to any questions you may have and vice versa.
