Welcome!

I spoke to someone in one of the boards and she also wanted to keep her roo so she puts him in a low cage at night so he can't strech & crow in the morning!

although he crows thorough out the day peopl were more tolerant if not woke up!

Boy, am I glad I stumbled onto this section. Glad to see so many other Tar Heels. Islandchick, I lived on Oak Island for 11 years, then sold my house in 2000 and moved back to the country, Iredell County to be exact. I grew up in Mecklenburg County on a small family farm. I always say I spent the first 18 years of my life trying to get off the farm and the next 40 years trying to get back. I loved Oak Island, tho, and still miss the beach. Now I get back there twice a year to see friends and fish. My chickens and calves take up most of my time now, and I love it!!! I've got eggs in the incubator:cool:, 11 more days to go, and I'm excited. I'm sure I'll be reading posts from all ya'll soon.

Thanks for checking on the rooster shushing RChicks. Not too sure if that would work with Chubs right now because he isn't full-on crowing, just practicing so he isn't stretching yet either. He really is the sweetest natured of my chickens, hope he stays that way - and quiet!! Nice to hear from you NCGnance! North Carolinians love their chickens apparently because there are sure a lot from here on this forum!!
I read one of these forums about feeding your chcikens treats and wondered if anyone else has tried this - I pour some of the start and grow in a bowl and mix it with water until it is wet but not soggy and fluff it up alittle bit. My RI Red babies and my Dom pullets and Chubs all go absolutely nuts over it! They eat every bite of it like it is the best treat they have ever had! I've been doing it for about 6 weeks with the Doms and for the past two with the Red babies and they consistnetly think they have gotten a great treat and eat it like crazy! Pretty much like tricking your kids into eating their vegetables, haha!! Course I do feed them treats too, crickets from the bait shop, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes and worms. Never tried the oatmeal but that will be next!
I cleaned the coop tonight and put down fresh pine shavings, that helps keep the flies down an awful lot and of course the ammonia smell too. So all went to bed happy tonight!!

Hello Scrambled, I 'm from LA (lower Alabama). I finally moved to the country 4 years agos and decided to keep chickens temporarily for the Grandkids but they were so facinating to me I had to learn everything I could by first going to library and checking out books then ole Granny here got into cyberspace and met a lot of nice chicken friends on several different chickens boards and learned a lot and am still learning. Went from Mutt chickens to to many chickens and breeds but have narrowed down to three breeds now and love them. They really relaxing. Nice to meet you here. Doesn't that young cockeral of yours sound like a teenage boys voice changing? I love to hear a young roo try out his crow.
