Hello! First chickens - need help with IDs :)

My husband has been Lurch on Halloween and has a scar on his forehead from a ceiling fan ;) He had one GF that wasn't even 5'! Meanwhile I'm dating guys barely as tall as me with a complex about it, haha. After I broke up with the last one, I said a little prayer, half in jest - "can you please send me just ONE tall one, please? hair a bonus but not essential." And then Scott appeared - 6'7", 270lbs., and more hair than me (and I look like Gilda Radner from SNL). I caught him in the brooder last night without me - I think he's starting to bond.
Be careful what you ask God for, right?

Hi Meg, welcome to BYC! Thank you for the wonderful introduction! It's nice to meet you! :frow
Your chicks are soo adorable! You should search the coop pages. There are a couple of Hobbit house coops that are really cool! Have fun with your new chicks! :)
Hobbit house coops? I'll be lookning at those for sure :) We have plans but haven't gone too far yet on building :)

Wondering if your black and white, feather footed ones are silver lace cochin. That's what mine looked like

At 12 days, these three are among the largest of the bunch (ironically the one chick I am sure is a cochin is the smallest atm). Feathers on the toes really starting to appear, stark black and white too. Exciting!

My flock is 12 days old now and doing really well - growing SO FAST. Brooder moved from large box to the basement bathtub as they were getting pretty rowdy :) we are already entering awkward phase and getting some good ideas on breeds. The golden yellow bird has me stumped - coloring right for salmon faverolle, but only 4 toes. Thinking Easter Eggers (1), French cuckoo marans or laced cochins (5), black copper or midnight majesty marans (4), wheaten marans (2), partridge cochin (6) and whatever "Butterscotch" (3) turns out to be.

This is a tool I like to use to help with mystery chick guesses. I think you're right that #2 could be a marans. I think #6 could be a Sicillian Buttercup!
That's a great tool! I analyzed every pic on there for the first few days :) I wish the Buttercup was an option, but I dont think hoover's has them, or not in this assortment. I just posted some updated pics now that they are getting feathers, see what you think now! :)

I love animals of all kinds and was that kid in school that couldn't focus on the teacher if there was a bunny, chicken, lizard, etc. in the classroom. I knew folks when I was still working for a university that showed chickens, and I was amazed at the varieties. But I also love the idea of having our own eggs, perhaps raising our own flock. I already grow a lot of our own food (veg, fruit), so this was the next step for greater food independence.
