Hello I am about tostart on a new chicken adventure!! My babies will be in the first week of April. Just in time for my birthday! Have the brooder all worked out, and loads of food, and lots of help to build the coop, now I need a plan and materials!

I'm excited and pretty ambitious, maybe too ambitious, but its going to be a great adventure!

I have my helpers lined up, am gathering reclaimed wood, have a clear path to the Home Depot and Lowe's but now I need to find a coop design that will go long across my back fence. I'm in Lafayette La and our restrictions say 25 ft from occupied buildings. So my spot has to go wide across the back near the fence. I've found so many great coop designs on your forum, and loads of great advice and info there as well. I will probably end up putting something together that takes the best ideas of many. What are some things to keep in mind? What do you wish you'd thought of before you built it? I'm thinking something with access on many sides so that will take some planning.

Thank you all for your wonderful sage advice you've already given me that you weren't aware you'd shared with me!

Hi and happy early birthday! We made our coop nice and tall so that the birds have plenty of space to hop around and roost! What kind of chickens are you expecting?

I ordered them from Meyer. I have a friend who has a health food store and she is excited about having fresh eggs to sell so I ordered their 25 chicks production pack. I was looking for sweet birds that would be social and that group looked perfect. She mentioned that she wanted to get some as well, and I am going to share mine with her instead. Lots of chickens! My late husband and I hand fed a baby cockatiel and raised it for years and years. So I am looking forward to handling them and getting them accustomed to being spoiled and watched over.

I hope my babies all make it in the mail. It seems too strange that they would ship them out, but many people on youtube have recorded their experiences so I can see that it does happen. I plan to notify my postman to expect them and just call me when they come in. It seems better than to risk them being on the truck any longer than necessary. I can't wait!

Can you share a picture of your coop? I had thought about going vertical but I'm not sure how tall is best.

Darn! I tried to post a picture only to realize I have not taken one! Of all the things to forget! I will have to get one for you tomorrow! Really sorry
