After admiring my friend's chickens, my husband and I decided to get our own backyard chickens. Due to our city's ordinance, Spokane, we'll be raising just three to four hens. My husband is busy building the coop and it's up to me to prepare their first home. I have a big sturdy box that should work for the first few weeks. What is best to put on the floor of their brooder? I've read rags, wood pellets, saw dust? They'll be in the house for a few weeks - I don't want our house to small like a barn, but I want the chicks to be comfortable.

Thanks for any tips and advice!

! Pleased you joined our community! When it comes to baby chicks, most people use pine (not cedar) shaving available at your local farm and ranch. Very absorbent and soft and relatively easy to clean out and replace. I've linked a couple links to you that might be helpful. Best of luck to you and have fun!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

For the first few days I use puppy training pads - absorbent, good footing, and easy to change. After that I use a mix of pine shavings and pelleted pine horse bedding - helps a lot with the smell and dust.

Thanks so much for all of the great information and links. I'm counting the days until I get my chicks...I'm looking forward to making them into pets - I'm not too concerned with eggs. My husband is building a beautiful coop, which I'll post pics of when it's complete.
