Hi everyone, I have been ending up at this site many times over the last month as I googled chicken/goose questions. So I finally decided to join so I can see how much I found online is true and how much is hogwash, and maybe share a few new tips I discovered.
So to start with I am mother with 3 children ranging in age from 11 to 18. My husband and I bought our property 2 years ago and I choose it because I was very close to the previous owners as a child. With the house came 2 outside cats that I was asked to care for before the previous owners past away and I agreed. Well both cats were female and were not fixed! I found homes for many kittens but not all before I was able to tame and spay 1 and trap and spay the other. So we have 4 indoor cats now as well since kids being kids adopted some. All are female and all are fixed! We also have 6 dogs, 4 of which are rescues of 1 kind or another, and I built them their very own pen becaus they are escape artists! Its doggy Fort Knox, and was a very great learning experience for me as I used some of what I learned to keep my dogs in to build my chicken coop to keep stray dogs out! We have a stray problem here but more on that later.
As a child my parents had chickens/ducks/geese and I have good memories of getting eggs, watching our old game hen Julie Brown hatch babies, and playing with our old male goose Lucky. I wanted that again for me and my kids so I got chickens and geese. First I purchased 18 straight run chicks, 6 Rhode Island Reds, 6 Barred Rocks, and 6 Silver Laced Wyandottes, they threw in a free Wyandotte chick but 1 Barred Rock died so still 18 straight run. I also purchased 6 geese in 2 batches of 3 a week apart. I also purchased 6 Buff Orpington pullets and 6 Black Austolorp pullets. It's a lot of chickens but the only hatchery close enough has a habit of throwing all extra male chicks into their straight runs so I figured we would get a lot of males. It seems I was right from the straight runs I think I have 1 BR hen, 3 RIR hens and 2 SLW hens, the geese seem to be 5 males and 1 female. They are 6 weeks and only just starting to display sex characteristics and I will wait to be absolutely sure. I have found 1 potential gander a new home at my sisters, she will wait another couple months to take him because she has problems with hawks and the geese are safer with me, and I plan to keep 2 roosters for myself. The rest may end up in the freezer.
I also enjoy gardening, I have roses, wisteria, lantanna, gardenia and a few other flowering plants that are beautiful. I have strawberry, raspberry, blueberry plants, and a herb garden that gets new additions every year. Currently have basil, oregano, 2 kinds of parsley, cilantro, chives, shallots, lavender, and cornflower. I also got a mandarin orange tree for my birthday this year and it's in bloom! So excited
So hi everyone, hope I didn't bore you with all that.

Welcome to BYC!

Not boring at all! You have quite the assortment of birds and pets!

If you do have questions as to the sex of some of your birds, you can post their pics in our What Gender section here on BYC for a good ID...

https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this

And we also have a Goose section if you want to chat with other Goose owners....

Great that you could join. Pull up a roost bar and welcome to our flock!

Thanks! I will be chatting on both the chicken and goose sections! Now matter what I learn I seem to have more questions pop into my head. It is a good thing I love learning! If I can't ID the sex of my birds by 3 months of age I will post pics for help but until then I'd like to watch and learn. I'm thinking of having the family lay odds on the hens to roosters numbers and see who is right, kind of like an educational game for them.

At what age would you recommend free ranging the chicks? They have been in their big bird coop for 2 weeks now but are still small and I'm concerned abouts stray cats and dogs getting them. My outside cats won't even look at them but a man a few houses down has 7 feral cats that would happily kill them all. (currently trying to humanely trap them before I have to shoot 1). Same goes for the stray dogs, the owners don't take care of them and they rountely rip through chain link fences to try and kill my cats/ my nieghbors cats/ and my other neighbors game chickens, as soon as they realize fat non-flying laying chickens are here it will get worse. I have done everything by the book and call the sheriff and they had a word with them but the dogs are still terrorizing the neighborhood. I will shoot them if I have to, but would really like to not have to kill the dogs, it's the owners I'd like to smack!
Anyway, I take the geese out daily for supervised grazing and swimming and a couple chicks get very distressed being left behind cause they are best friends with the geese, even using them as mobile roosts! Lol. So far I have been lucky, no dog has come by while the birds have been out but my luck won't hold forever. But the chickens want their buddies and play time too! I don't have a tractor and it wouldn't work with how many birds we have and the layout of the yard, so it's all or nothing. They either get free range time or have to stay penned and wait for me to bring clipping from my garden.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Sounds like you are going to have a really busy summer! At what age to free range, have you considered electric poultry netting if you want to let your birds out? From what it sounds like, you have major predator problems, there really is no good age since while roosters may be a decent warning system, they really can't do much against any real predators like stray dogs who can take out the whole flock in a very short time. Nice thread on free ranging https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/701610/free-range-or-not-what-does-everyone-prefer there are a number of threads on electric poultry netting https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/843512/electro-net-fencing

Yes we do have stray dogs and cats, but they do keep other predators away. We can here the coyotes but have not seen one here in over 20 years, because of the dogs. We also don't have raccoon, skunk, possum, rat, or snake problems and I believe it's because of all the dogs and cats around. So while they are a problem they also keep other problems away. I have layers of protection planned for my birds, I'm trying to trap the nastiest feral cats and move them out to a barn or ranch that needs mousers, have a few people interested. The rest will be fixed and released to hopefully keep other cats from moving in, I'm working with a cat rescue organization to achieve a balance. They have been really nice and helpful. I have an awesome Shepard mix that I want to introduce to the birds soon. He used to hate men and kill cats on sight. Now he loves men and lives with 4 inside cats and not only tolerates them but disciplines them and defends them from the 2 puppies that think they are walking chew toys. He is very smart and has a very high need to please me. He just might become my flock guardian and be a real working Shepard, lol. The birds will only be allowed free range when either my husband or myself are home. I have my trusty 9mm and he has a 45 to defend the birds from the dogs that won't stay away. For the past year I have shot any dog caught in my yard with my sons first BB gun to chase them out, a few cats too. Most took the hint and haven't returned. The BB don't hurt, it feels like a bee sting but put 2 shots in an animals behind and they run! We have been working on our fencing and only have 1 major weak spot that has us scratching our heads. An automatic gate that is too high off the ground, we have considered putting speed bumps right in front to block it up, but we may have to lose the automatic gate and put in a manual 1 if we can't figure this out soon. I also have motion activated lights, great for night predators. The electric poultry netting would be something to look into, but I would need to think about thebest way to use it for my situation.i have lots of trees and building on my property and a determined cat would use that to get in unless I roofed it. I think I will be able to control the dog and cat problems, my Shepard and rott don't like strange dogs here and will attack, if I can get 1 or both friendly with the birds that will help tremendously. I think my biggest problem will be the hawks, last year a red tailed hawk tried to get my moms small 10lb pug with us not 5 feet away! The dog ran and the hawk hit the tree over our heads but it was a scary experience for all involved. Anyway, thank you for the great ideas and the warm welcome.

Good luck with your chicken and goose raising adventures! Everyone here is really helpful. Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center! Glad to have you with us. I hope you find everything that you need to know!

I have happy news! The big mean steel grey Tom cat was caught and relocated last night! Yay I am so happy he is gone, my outside cats, Patches and Shadowcat were terrified of him and I had caught him trying to break into the chicken coop many times. So all my girls are now a bit safer with him gone. Hopefully I can catch more cats and rehome them or at least get them fixed to control the population. I also discovered 1 of the stray dogs, the big black lab, had been hit by a car and killed. I feel bad for him but am also relieved that he won't be a threat to my kids and animals anymore.
The chickens are loving the new roosts we installed yesterday, and the BR roosters are getting their crowns and wattles in so I'll know very soon how many hens I have. The BR are also my friendliest birds, roosters too. So I will most likely keep a BR Roo. The RIR are looking more like Production Reds, they don't have that deep dark color that I remember my parents reds having. A little disappointed about that, but oh well.
The geese are growing at an unbelievable rate, and 1 goose who I'm calling Jasper cause I think it's a boy, is always trying to climb in my lap and snuggle! I introduced them to their kiddie pool yesterday and they did not know what to make of it, the water was so much higher than their previous tub. When I first gave them a tub for bathing they were just as confused, but 2 days later all were trying to get in and only 3 fit at a time. Now only 2 can squeeze in so I felt it was time for another upgrade. Give them a day or 2 and they will be back to splashing and playing in their new pool!
I do have a question, anyone know of organic ways to repel wasps from tring to build nests on the corners of the chicken run? I caught a big red wasp yesterday trying to do just that. Luckily it was only 1 and I was able to kill it with a fly swatter, but a nest with multiple wasps would be much harder to kill, and I am allergic to them. Every month I sweep my yard and kill all wasps, using wasp and hornet killer, but they keep coming back and i dont want to use poison around the chickens.I leave bees alone even though I'm allergic to them too. The wasps are the real threat.
Any ideas would be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!
