Hello...from a new member in New York

Hi fellow NY BYC, I am new to all this. Looking to start my back yard family. I live in the Finger Lakes, NY. I want to know how many should I start with. I just am using them for eggs only. Plus the joy of raising them.
Any suggestions of breed or start up info is appreciated.

Welcome to BYC!

You might want to start in our learning center. All kinds of good articles on getting started, raising the chicks, building the coop and keeping your adult flock happy, healthy and safe from predators....

As for how many birds you need, chickens are social creatures and need companionship of each other. So a flock or 3 or 4 is the least amount you should start with. If you start with chicks, always get 1 extra as sometimes they all don't make it to adulthood. Skip the rooster if these are only being kept for pets and eggs. Roosters can cause a lot of trouble.

You might also want to chat with your chicken neighbors in your state thread to see how they do things up in your territory...

Enjoy this wonderful journey you are on and welcome to our flock!
