Hi members. I've recently started raising chickens on the family homestead. Something my family has done since the Civil War minus the past fifteen years. I have already found loads of useful information and look forward to learning more from you all.

My flock consists of 40 Buff Orpingtons straight run, 3 Barred Rock pullets along with 4 Rhode Island Red pullets. I've already considered looking into crossing a Buff rooster to a Barred hen. I absolutely love RareRoo's cross

in the Sex Link thread and am barely into delving thru it but looking forward to it. To think they will lay even more eggs is amazing. I also plan to have some setters/mothers and keep my flock self-sustaining. Thanks for reading this and hello to you.Very nice site.

Hi and welcome to BYC - thanks for joining us and congratulations on your new flock. Sex linking is great if you don't want to raise cockerels, but as for hybrid vigour (laying more eggs than either parent breed) it can work if one parent is a poor layer. Where both parents are good layers, you are not likely to see much difference, in my experience. It still doesn't mean its not worth doing, and fun though.

You'll find lots of info in the Learning Centre - https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center and if you have a specific topic in mind, just type it in the search box - there's a wealth of information on past and present threads.

You may wish to consider joining your state thread as it will put you in touch with other BYC members in your area - https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/270925/find-your-states-thread#post_3239224

Thank you. I plan on breeding the hybrids for meat mostly. I'll also keep my original strain self-sustaining or hope to. Really looking forward to a deep freeze full of chicken if you catch my drift :) Plus egg money can't hurt either!

Those of you that raise Buff Orpingtons..How do you rate the flavor & juiciness of their meat? Eggs too please!

Thank you all very much for the warm welcome. I can't explain how excited we are here to be raising chickens again.
