I’ve been wanting to have chickens for a long long time, and now that I’m in my 50s it seems like the stars are in alignment: my wife is interested as is my 24 year old daughter who lives at home.

So now I’m becoming a quick study on everything - I know we’re getting a late start but TSC near us is selling pullets so that may help us jumpstart our coop.

I’ll be reading a lot here, likely asking questions too - thanks in advance

No chickens yet but we plan to start with 3-6

Welcome to BackYard Chickens and congratulations to finally be moving toward getting your chickens! If you ever have any questions on getting setted up, taking care of your chickens, or anything else, feel free to ask. :D

Hello and welcome to BYC!!!! :frow
We are so glad you joined us.
What breeds are you planning on getting?
If you decide to go to TCS for your chicks I really recommend getting the sapphire gem. They are so friendly. Mine lays HUGE eggs.
The males are light gray with white on their heads and the females are dark gray with no markings.

Hello and Welcome to BYC. Glad to have you with us in this Poultry Loving Community. Make sure you get a coop 3-4 times larger that what TSC recommends. Chickens need elbow room especially when the weather does not permit them to be out in a run or free ranging. Predator proof the coop and the run.

Hi, if you want to get a jump start a coop, a shed can make a good one. Add lots of ventilation and a roost (and eventually a nesting box or two and that should cover the basics. If you have questions, always feel free to post in the appropriate forum.

Thanks for joining!
