Hello from Alaska!

Hello all! I joined this group to hopefully meet some quality breeders and maybe even get some advice on cold hardy breeds. I am not new to chickens by any means, but as I just recently moved to Alaska I have not yet raised chickens here. The place luckily came with a full chicken coop already setup in the barn. I grew up raising a bunch of different common breeds, and in my adulthood I have had red sexlinks most recently. I have been interested in Speckled Sussex chickens for many years now.

I am mainly interested in learning about having chickens in a northern climate, as we can easily reach -35 degrees F. But most importantly I want to select the right breed. I would like to stick with a heritage breed that is hardy and a good egg layer. Dual purpose would also be a bonus. I would like to buy quality stock to start with, as I want to maintain breed standards and improve my flock over time.

Welcome! What a lovely view ! I would recommend chickens with peacombs, and maybe feathered feet. Wyandottes, cochins, brahmas are good choices. Have fun!

Welcome to Backyard Chickens. You might also consider the Chanticleer breed that was developed to handle Canadian winters. It has a very flat comb to prevent frostbite.
