Greetings everyone! My name is Jenn and I am a newbie to chickens. I just had my coop delivered on Saturday and then picked up my 6 6-week old pullets (I hope) on Sunday. Is it prolific that I got my first chickens on Mother's Day?
I live in Wasilla, AK aka; "The Valley" and I work in Anchorage. I LOVE living in the Last Frontier and there really is nowhere else like Alaska!
The chicks I have are 2 silver laced Wyandottes, 2 Buff Orphingtons, one Rhode Island Red and the last one I am unsure; she looks like she may be another Wyandotte, but is brownish red and gray striped type feathers. Very pretty and she is super sweet! I did not think that I would like these chicks as much as I do already... they really do have little personalities! I am so looking forward to watching them grow and do what chickens do, and help eat up bugs (hopefully they will love mosquitoes!) and help me to keep the grass at a reasonable length. They could start laying by the 3rd week of August, so that is something to look forward to.
Here is a picture of her - can anyone help tell me what kind she is??
My coop is 6' by 10' and is BEAUTIFUL. It is well insulated and I added a second window for good cross ventilation. I also had it wired so there is a light inside and there are also 4 outlets for keeping it warmer and keeping the water from freezing during our long winters. I plan to add another 2 roosts this weekend for the girls.
I am SO happy I found this site and joined this forum. I have already learned so much by reading all the amazing information and I really enjoy all the forum discussions. Looking forward to learning more and more each day about these fascinating creatures and getting to know some of you as well!
