My Coop
My Coop
Hello all. We are very new to chickens. We just acquired our first chicky babies, 2 Ameraucanas and 2 BR, last Thursday at two days old and hopefully they are all girls because we can't have a roo. :( I had a question and I couldn't figure out where to post it so maybe someone here will help.

I was wondering for those in urban neighborhoods and those who have only hens, have you ever run into any complaints from your neighbors? If so how did you address it and solve the problem? We are still in the building stage of our coop and our only neighbor that can see the coop is excited while the other neighbors can't see what's going on, but I imagine the ladies aren't going to be silent chicks and will make noise. Do people complain about noise? What do they complain about if anything?

Just thought I would ask.

Really looking forward to our new experience. We already throughly enjoy our new babies.

I'm not in an urban or suburban setting, but... So you know hens are legal? That's a big plus...lol. Then don't worry too much about noise. Hens will cackle quite a bit when an egg is laid (or getting ready to be laid), but are pretty quiet other than that. MUCH quieter than yapping dogs.
Depending on your neighborhood, the appearance of the coop itself might be a factor - something NOT an eyesore would appease many neighbors. And keeping your coop/run clean will be a selling point (or not) too. Just as you don't want to live next to someone's house who lets their yard fill up with piles of dog poop, nobody wants to live next to someone who lets chicken poop pile up.

No, Albuquerque is very chicken friendly. City ordinance allows up to 15 hens and 1 roo, but I just don't want to irritate the folks that surround my house either. I just have a very complainy (is that a word) neighbor that I don't want to hear any complaints from :) The good news is he really can't see in my yard because of fencing. I also want a beautiful coop. I was just trying to prepare myself from any complaints from one certain neighbor. I do have a neighbor across the street that has 12 hens and I never hear them unless I am in his yard (wished I could trade places with him and he could deal with grumpy below us). LOL
