Interior Alaska
Hi everyone,
We are new to the chicken community!

Just prior to getting married a little over a year ago, we bought property in Interior Alaska and started building our home...

Our adventurous family includes:

(1) building/residential-contracting, surfing, backcountry-skiing, Australia-Alaska transplanted, LOTR fan <him>
(1) opera-singing, voice-teaching, coffee loving, wannabe gardener/photographer, yogi <her>
(1) frisbee-catching, stick chewing, spotted-eared, people-pleasing, swim-loving, heeler mix
(1) crossed-eyed, princess paws, scrap-scrounging, loud-meowing, lynx-point siamese
(1) lazy-loafing, lap-snuggling, illegal-houseplant-munching, rumble-purring, chirping calico

... and recently we took the plunge & acquired three EE and three RIR peeps on Easter weekend. So far it appears they are all hens. We spent the past week building an insulated coop + run situation for them, and began to transition them to the outdoors. Last night was their first night in the coop! :jumpy

When we first decided to get a couple of laying hens this spring, we had no idea that there was such a supportive and vibrant community of chicken lovers. Thanks for already making our introduction as chicken tenders SO much easier. Any tips/advice for a brand new chicken parents & flock would be much appreciated.
Special topics of interest include: learning the ropes/tips for beginners, cold weather conditions advice, chicken friendly gardening/design, biggest definite do's/biggest mistakes to avoid, and anything else you'd like to share with us.

Have a wonderful day, and thanks for reading!
XO, The Blairs
