Hello from Ann Arbor

Hi, I am living in the countryside outside of Ann Arbor. I
am new to contemplating keeping chickens. Have plenty
of space, main concerns are predators, (snakes mainly) cold winters....
but I am reading up on the topic at present. Looking for a hen house....
not wanting to build one ....

Welcome from Ontario, Canada. I'm figuring you would have about the same predators that we would have--snakes have never been a concern--neighbours dogs yes, snakes, no. Coyotes, coons, oppossum, hawks, possibly. I have freeranged mine for two years, only lost one to a neighbours dog.

from WI. Plenty of options to building.....check out the coop design section. You may be able to convert a shed or playhouse, may be able to find somethinng used on CraigsList or buy a prefab coop or....hire someone with carpenrty skills to build one; depends on your needs and how much you can/want to spend. Check out some of the coops on the site and you will get a better idea
