I am looking at getting (2) chickens. But I want them to enjoy my backyard. I desire them to be free range. But I dont know about a coop for them. I wanted to go with a dog house ( I like being different) but I dont have a clue about should it be raised off the ground? can I place nesting boxes near by for the egg's. To eat not to raise chicks. Anyone here have ideas for me??? Thank you!!!! Mike

Good luck with your chicken raising adventures, and I hope you find everything you need to know! Don't forget to take a look at BYC's very useful learning center (If you haven't already)! Glad to have you with us. The learning center as well as the forum should answer your questions. The BYC coops tab should give you ides on you coop!

I would recommend getting at least three chickens. Three is a flock, two is a pecking contest. The dog house might work if it was highly ventilated. Here in AZ at lower elevations we're more concerned with heat than cold, so whatever shelter you provide should focus more on keeping them cool. Come to the BYC Arizona thread and look at some of the coops folks use here to get some ideas. Be sure to ask lots of questions, they're really helpful there.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! X3 on check out the BYC Learning Center and Coops section. If you do a search on BYC other people have modified dog house into a chicken coop for a small flock, most people raise them since chickens like to be up and it is easier to get into and clean etc, and add perches since most chickens like to roost (some breeds like silkies may be fine on the floor)...you can make a separate nest outside if there is not room in the coop, you might look into bucket nests.
