(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? I have had my chickens since February 2020.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now? We began with 8 Rhode Island Reds; 4 hens, 4 roos and then purchased so right now I have 51 birds and 18 Breese coming in the next couple of weeks.
(3) What breeds do you have? 11 Australorps, 6 Buffs, 8 Ideal 236ers, 7 Rhode Island Reds, and 3 Easter Eggers. Atwoods had a "sale" after the storm a couple of weeks ago and I purchased 20 more assorted pullets. We have 55 and 18 Breese coming in a couple of weeks.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens? They are just fun to watch and LOVE having eggs made in my own backyard! Personalities are unique and they help keep insect and mice population down as well. Began putting tree trimmings in their run (18 x 120 feet) and I will have great compost for my garden!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies? Raising rabbits, goats and Dexters, Kayaking, gardening, watching sci-fi movies and reading.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have 2 small house dogs and added an LGD to our family in October and he has been a TREMENDOUS asset to our farm! We lost a few chickens to local dog until he showed up. Now, no predators get past our property line! I work M-F and farm, try to rest on Saturday and begin my week on Sunday.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I have googled and found BYC in searches many times over the past several months.
