Hello all,

I have 2/3 of an acre in the outskirts of Auburn, WA - City code doesn't permit me to own chickens on less than an acre. I decided to do it anyway. Any advice on building a little bit more of a clandestine coop? I got 4 little RIR's that are two weeks old and need to build them a home outside soon. I have a cedar fence on three sides of the yard blocking most of the view to the outside world but would love to hear ideas on what others maybe have done in general for smaller coops.

Hi there. There are lots of people from Washington here. I'm in Renton.
I'm surprised Auburn has those restrictions, there are a couple others from Auburn here.
Try doing a search for stealth coops in the coop area of BYC. I've seen pictures of coops disguised to look like garbage cans etc.
Try and make sure your neighbors are on board. No complaints means no city officials coming by.

Hi and welcome to BYC from Central Texas!

  1. There is a website called Change.org that is used to start petitions. Someone in Houston, Texas recently asked members of the The Austin Backyard Poultry Meetup Group to sign her petition. Perhaps something like this would be helpful.
  2. There is a film called Mad City Chickens that talks about other places with similar problems, but also has other chicken stories. It's a fun film!
  3. We had similar problems in Austin, but eventually talked the City Council into changing the law. There are dozens of reasons that raising poultry is good for a city. Most modern books on raising poultry seem to have chapters devoted to this topic.

Otherwise, tall fences, hedges, and vines to hide your birds from the street. Get your neighbors on your side - perhaps offer them fresh eggs, or offer to take their compostable kitchen and table scraps as supplemental feed for your birds. If you trust them, invite neighbors over to see your setup. If necessary, get the kids interested - the parents will probably follow. If the neighbors don't rat you out to the city, you probably won't run into issues.
Best wishes!
