Hi everyone, Carrot here. I live in Austria and have been keeping chickens for about 3 years. I started out with Amrocks and Light Suss ex then got some Isa Browns (Ginger Rangers). I've raised about 50 birds, the natural way, and have also started breeding Muscovy ducks, it would have been Peking ducks but I lost them to a dog attack.

I now have 4 laying hens (Amrock X Suss ex, I lost about 20 birds and 15 chicks to a fox in late spring) and a breeding trio of Altsteirer, which are a native breed to Austria. I will also be getting Welsummer bantams and standard Bielefelder Kennhühner in a few weeks, once I've finished building the coops.

Welcome to BYC! Sounds like you will be able to help a lot of people with your experience. We're glad you joined!

So sorry to hear of your losses! I've had that happen myself but I got the culprit and that made me feel a little better.

Good luck with your new flock! Post pics once they get here.

I lost a few hens to raccoons about a year ago.

Since then I review the security of my coop regularly.

Oooo...Altsteirers. I've read that those are endangered. Is that true?
They're the birds with mini crests, right?
