Hello and thank you for this wonderful website!

I am a new chicken owner. I just started my flock about 4 months ago.

I currently have 8 hens and 1 roo.

The Rooster:
Che Guevara- He is a black copper maran; 5-6 months old

The Hens:
Camilla the Chicken- She is a black copper maran; 5-6 months old
Frida Kahlo- She is a Plymoth Barred Rock; 6 months old
Goldie Hawn- She is a gold sex-linked, 5-6 months old
Pectin- She is a brown sex-linked, 5-6 months old
Beaker- She is a white Silkie, 1 year old. Beaker is our newest addition after we swapped out Kate Hudson (golden bantam hen/rooster) who started to crow and fight with Che Guevara

I have two chicks that who are awaiting their names as soon as they lay eggs or crow...can't tell their sex yet. They are both lavender orphingtons.

So far I've had a real rough time getting a healthy flock started! I've battled a baby opossum who killed "Kellogg," the welsummer chicken. Camilla came down with a nasty case of Fowl Pox over her nares. This spread to a few others despite her isolation in our guest bedroom; no mortality in the flock though! Currently dealing with some respiratory disease in the two lavender orphingtons, who are responding well to duramycin-10 and isolation. Also, Pectin is limping badly (please see my thread in the forums under emergencies and injuries). Otherwise....lots of money invested and not a single egg!!!! However, I do have 9 wonderful chickens that greet me every morning.

In addition to the chickens I have 4 dogs (3 dachshunds and 1 aussie/catahoula mix), 1 old cat, and lots of orchids.

I am a marine toxicologist/ oceanographer/ biologist with a background in animal sciences.

I hope to contribute to many threads based on the experiences I have had so far in my short period of chicken keeping!

P.S.: Anybody know any chicken vets in Louisiana?

Hello and welcome to BYC

You've had an awful lot of problems! I'm afraid I can't recommend a vet, I have one, but we're in the wrong country! Keep posting in the Emergencies and Diseases though. We have some very knowledgeable members here. (Including a few vets

. You can try the Louisiana thread in the Where am I? Where are you! section to see if they know of any local vets.
