I live in central BC Canada on 5 acres and finally decided to do the whole chicken thing! My husband and I have been wanting to start a small hobby farm since we moved up here 4 years ago.
We figured we would start with a few heritage meat birds (we didn't want to do layers because we weren't quite sure about keeping chickens through out our long cold winters)...... right now we have 26 red rangers and 3 silkies (they were an impulse buy when we went to pick up the other chicks) that are 4 1/2 weeks old and just went to live outside in their coop. We ordered more red rangers and silkies which will be here middle of the month. We also have turkeys coming at the end of the month and we are looking into getting some ducks! We're loving it!
Aside from the birds we also have 3 dogs, 2 cats and a bearded dragon.
I've been perusing this forum for quite some time now and finally decided to join.

We built our chicken coop with all salvaged materials

My mastiff cross loves the chickens and is turning out to be a great guardian!

Welcome to BYC!

Nothing wrong with reusing materials that otherwise have no use anymore. The chickens don't care!

You might enjoy chatting with your chicken neighbors in the Canada thread here...

Enjoy all your poultry adventures and welcome to our flock!

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Good luck with all your new poultry projects! Nice job of re-purposing material!

Hello BC! It's great to see a BC thread here. I'm also in central BC, with a mixed flock of Silver Laced Wyandottes, Barred Plymouth Rock, Ameraucanas, EE/OEs, Welsummers, and Chanteclers. I couldn't just get 1 breed; I really want some of everything! I have 21 chickens now and will probably cull all but 1 or 2 roosters this fall. We just moved them outside a few weeks ago and they are loving it. They are foraaging rock stars, especially the Welsummers. I am completely addicted.

Does anyone have any thoughts or advice on the following:

-where to buy egg cartons in bulk? I'd love to buy Canadian made if there's anything out there.

-how to keep water from freezing in winter? We have power in our coop so if anyone has recommendations for heaters, electric or otherwise, I'd love to hear your wisdom.

Thanks - I love seeing everyone's pictures and ideas!

Welcome to the flock. Are your temps warm enough outside for young silkies. Usually chicks stay inside till they are fully feathered out - which is about 6-8 weeks.

Welcome from Northern Alberta, Jacquic! A well insulated, well bedded coop should keep chickens warm, even in our extreme climate!

Speckly Chicken, Seven Oaks in Alberta sells bails of 200 egg cartons (choice of the styrofoam or paper types). 780-471-1657, don't think they have an online store. Also, Farm Innovators makes a couple of great products for our winters. They have a heated Fount base for the galvanized waterers or a heated plastic fount. They also sell Thermo-cubes that you can plug a heat lamp into. The Thermo-cube will turn the heat bulb on at 2 degrees Celsius . Just make sure you double check and get the correct one as there are three different temperature range options. Farm Innovators products are available at most farm stores.

Welcome to BYC! Glad you decided to join our flock. We vacationed in BC in early June and had a wonderful time. You have a beautiful mixed flock, and it's a blessing having a dog that will actually guard your chickens instead of chasing and killing them. Usually chickens and dogs don't mix as many BYC members have learned the hard way. Good luck with your flock.
