Hello from Brisbane, Qld!

Thanks guys! Like I said, I know nothing about chickens. Lol... I'm just winging it and learning as I go. I just went outside and found her throwing dirt everywhere. I thought there was something wrong with her and freaked out. Thankfully someone eased my mind and told me about dirt baths. She just roled around in her own poo... Yuck!

Considering I don't know where she has come from, should I get her wormed, flea'd? Anything else I should do?

Deworming her would be a good idea, yes. You can't always tell when they have worms and many of us do it as a precaution. Valbazen is a very good dewormer. Dosage is 1/2cc for standard size chickens and 1/4 for bantams administered orally. It's up to you if you want to eat the eggs afterwards. There is a 14 day withdrawal period. For mites and bugs Sevin dust is very good.

You must see if you can find her a friend. If you can keep a rooster where you live you can look here:

and there is usually lots of chickens for sale on Craig's List.

Hi and welcome to BYC

Try looking for chickens on gumtree! I'm another Aussie, and that's where I got my new hens from! There's also a good article on here about what to look for in chickens you are buying to make sure they are healthy.

And welcome!

Thank you all! We can't have roosters here, but have been looking out for hens. We've had penny back for two days now and she hasn't laid an egg yet - is that normal?

I am going to get her some worming medication as well. Thanks :)

Hi Alecia, I'm at Dakabin just out of Brisbane (next to Alma Park Zoo). I find the best place to look for chooks is farmstock.com.au That's where alot of the breeders advertise their birds (sorry I'm too useless to insert a hyperlink). There is at least 20 or so advertisements placed daily. You might even want to think about buying a particular breed of purebred chook rather than going to the local poultry shop where they usually only sell Isa Browns. I always bought the Isa Browns then one day I got some chooks from gumtree which included a croad langsham bantam. That triggered me to research different breeds and I was amazed at all the different types and by the politics (chicken industry uses one type of chicken so heritage breeds dying out blah blah blah..) I'm hooked on my Welsummers now and have breed them.

Its my little way of helping to preserve the gene pool of and promoting a fairly rare beed. Just a thought for you. Be warned though! once you start enjoying the antics of your chook you might get hooked. Deb PS. Penny will lay when she's ready, how frequently depends on her breed.

Hi debluvachook! I am in Ipswich :) thank you for that link! I will have a look and see what I can find. We're not sure what penny is because we found her, not bought her. She is a brown chicken though, with white stripes on the back of her head. And sort of gingery diamonds at the base of her neck.

There's a picture of her on this link: http://aleciabaaa.wordpress.com/

Can you happily put 2 breeds in together? We are only allowed 2 chickens from what I can tell (actually we are renting and aren't allowed any, so will have to hide her for inspections.)

I was outside with her before, and the neighbours dog barked at her. She ran straight past her house, and hid behind me. I've never felt so loved and needed before. Lol!!! Then she tried to eat my clothes (unsuccessfully). I can't believe what a freak she has turned me into. Earlier I googled chicken poos! When I open up the search bar, it gives me suggestions for chickens!
