I just joined and am just posting to say Hello. I live in Central CA in an AG/Res area. I am totally loving the country life. We have had as many as 3 horses, two pigs, two dogs, two cats (soon to be many more), 13 chickens (as of now, soon to be many, many more. Next hatch due Sunday thru Thurs). We have been watching the Forum for some time as guests, but just recently decided to join in on all the fun. We have been learning a lot of info from everyone here. I hope that we will be more interactive as time goes by. Thank you for all the info we have already learned.

Thank you all!

My Chickens consist of Two Bantam Roos that were part of our first flock. Purchased from Tractor Supply as chicks. Of which we had six hens that were Bantams as advertised. But after learning more through here, we found out we had two Silkie Bantams that we sold with the other four we thought were just plain Bantams. The one Silkie we had was an absolutely beautiful black hen that was very broody and we should never have gotten rid of her for what we sold them all for. Live and learn I guess. We picked up five Leghorn Pullets and a Rhode Island Red Roo later on. The flock we have now consists of 5 Leghorn hens outside with the two Bantam Roos and the RIR Roo, all about 10 months old right now. Inside the house we have Lemon, our first hatched chick, hatched on Thanksgiving Day and 3 more about 3 weeks old now. We are on our next hatch starting Sunday. Now, is it possible that because we have a RIR Roo and Leghorn hens that we could get hens that will lay brown eggs? All the eggs we get now are white. We are looking forward to selling eggs as well as chicks and hens as they get older. I know our ratio of hens to Roos is way low so the first few hatches may end up being added to our current flock and kept, but we are planning on selling them in the near future. I can remember as a child having chickens in our back yard growing up. Oh and another question, my Mother says to put about a 1/4 teaspoon of bleach per gallon of water to help keep the chickens healthy. Is this true???

P.S. Willow Alaska sounds like HEAVEN on Earth to me. I am totally enthralled with Alaska. Love the idea of getting away from it all in a place like that someday. I'm learning how to get there now.
