My name is Janie and I had chickens over 20 years ago while living in rural Gilroy. We had 12 RIR hens and I loved them. Flash forward post-divorce and 17 years later. I live in a condo, but talked my elderly parents into having chickens in their big back yard. Daddy is now gone, but Mom loves the company of our girls.
We have a Speckled Sussex named Fiona, a Partridge Cochin named Dee Dee, a Barnevelder named Wilhemina and an Easter Egger named Alice. They are all laying, with the exception of Wili, which is a long story. Also, the EE lays tan eggs, not blue or green.
I found out about this forum from Silicon Valley Chickens, a local forum. I have found these groups to be very helpful with tips, diagnosing problems, etc. Also, sharing the joy that these birds bring to our families.
Other hobbies include cooking, reading and gardening.
We live about two miles from our hens. Mom changes their water every day and collects eggs. I'm there about every few days. I am married and have two daughters, ages 19 and 22. We also have a Boston Terrier named Lucy, who loves looking in our flock. They seem to tolerate each other very well.
Cheers to you all and happy chicken ranching!
Janie
