Hi there fellow Backyard Chicken-ers!

I'm Mallory, 24 years old, from a small military town in Ontario, Canada. I currently live on a half acre of land with my boyfriend, our two cats, our axolotl, and now three gorgeous baby Red Star hens!



I just brought these lovely girls home today as my first foray into backyard chickens. Eventually we'd like to get ourselves a small hobby farm, so I can keep my two horses (both thoroughbreds) at home, but for now we're city-slickin' homesteaders!

My boyfriend is HUGE into growing our own veggies, so for us chickens were the next logical step. The massive gardens we have are his pet project, and the hens are mine! We might start up an urban homesteading blog/YouTube, since both of us love to cook, create, and share what we're doing!

Glad you could join the flock! What adorable chicks you have there :love You are going to have some excellent egg layers there with your girls. I too stared out my chicken adventures with red sex links or warrens as they are called over here in the UK. They were a lovely bird to keep and friendly too. You have some great plans there to have a hobby farm. My goal is the same for the future too, small farm and have my horse at home. I too have a thoroughbred, he's 19 years young now and I've had him for 12 years.

Red Stars are great layers. They will do well for you over the years.

Red stars are great birds! They sure lay lots of eggs.

I hope you can achieve your dreams of having a small hobby farm. Is that you on one your horses in your avatar? Do you compete in horse shows? I have friends that do. I've never competed but I used to ride and work at a stable.

Welcome to BYC, Mallory. Glad you decided to join our flock. Red Star is one of a number of labels under which some hatcheries market their Red Sex Links which are laying machines. You should get loads of large, brown eggs from those three girls. :o) Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your Red Stars.

Hi Mountain Peeps!

And yup, that's one of mine :) That's my gelding Jezza! He came to me as a rescue situation and we've been showing him the past month or so in low under-fences classes to get some miles under his belt. He's a fantastic boy, very honest, just needed some re-training from his former home!
