Hi, my name is Allison. My husband, Kurtis, and have recently bought our first flock of chicks. We moved to our farm (about 31 acres) in northern, KY with our two toddlers earlier this year. We purchased 15 chicks (7 barred rock males, 3 barred rock pullets, 3 buff orpington pullets and 2 golden laced wyandottes pullets and got one extra gl wyandotte and an extra barred rock.) They are almost 5 weeks old now and so far we have been having a good time with them. We unfortunately have lost one barred rock unexpectedly at around 3 weeks old. We came home from a 4th of July party and he/she (i am more certain it was a he not a she) was just laying in the brooder, I have no idea what happened. Then the same week one of our buffs decided to take flight out of the brooder and our beagle got to her before I did. I am very excited to be joining BYC and hopefully can obtain some chicken knowledge from everyone. I am still curious on why our one chick died in the brooder with no apparent cause.

If anyone has any good tips for us in our new adventures in chicken, I'd love the advise. We are about to transfer them to the coop, we are building a mobile one and it has taken a little longer than expected to get it completed but I believe in the next couple of days they will be in there, so if there is any advise on how to make the transfer easier on the chicks that would be great!

thanks again!!

Hi and welcome to BYC! There's a lot of good information under the Learning Center tab, check it out if you haven't already. Sorry for your loss on the two little ones.

Thanks! There is so much info, its really nice to have some where to go and get a response so quickly!

You're right, there's a LOT of information available here and some very knowledgeable & friendly people too. If you need help finding answers about something, just post your question.

Please keep your chickens and dog well separated. He has already killed one and will be looking for opportunities to get others due to his prey drive.

Sorry about the loss of your other chick. Did he have any wounds or marks on him like he had been attacked. Chicks can and do gang up on another but, most likely it was one of those random deaths - that happen fairly often either when you receive shipped chicks, or in early times after getting them.

Alright Alison,

Well first question to you is what are you putting in the drinking water for the chicks ????

Here is a good tip for you a hard boiled egg a couple times a week do chicks a lot of good and helps with feather growth and all around health and I have very little crib death when I feed hard boiled egg's to my chicks and they do seem to grow a lot faster as well .....

So sorry for your losses. And yes, dogs and chickens don't mix. So make sure when you move your birds outside, your chicks have a safe coop and run and the dog can not enter.

Have you stopped by our learning center yet? Lots of good articles on all the aspects of keeping poultry...

Enjoy your new babies and welcome to our flock!

Thanks everyone.
@gander007And in the water is just plain water but I have been giving them some hard boiled eggs on the side. There was no apparent reason for the ones death, no marks no where, and it was one of the biggest chicks.

But thanks everyone for the advise.

Also we have learned our lesson with my dog. We keep her away.
