Hi! I am new to backyard chickens but have been involved in raising commercial chickens since 88’. Since Townsend went out of business last year, I have now been able to have a few chickens here at the house. I started my flock off with 3 Bantam Barred rock (2 hens and 1 rooster) & 2 Black French Marans (one of each). I am now trying my hand at incubating. After some research on this site and the “interweb”, I have built two “cooler” incubators. One is a still air and the other I put a fan in with adjustable heat. Right now each has 6 eggs and I am on my 8th day. After candling them I believe to have at least 4 fertile with life in each incubator. (the Maran eggs are hard for me to tell)
I am really excited about expanding my flock. As of now my chickens come out and free range during the day and go back in of an evening. It has been really different caring for 5 verse feeding and looking after 10,000 to the house, I have enjoyed this much better. I am looking forward to learning how to raise and care for the breeds I have and to learn about all the other types that are out there. Thank you in advance for any advice!
