Hello to all. I found backyardchickens.com last week, and have been reading info on the site & forums daily ever since. I am new to chickens and all of the reference and knowledge here has been great. Thanks for providing such a valuable resource to us newbies.
We are a family of four in Clovis, CA (transplanted from the great state of Texas). We have 2 sons, 6 & 5 years old, 3 dogs and 1 guinea pig currently, but want to get ourselves some chickens.
My dad got into birds as a retirement hobby, and has a mixed flock of chickens, guineas, turkeys, ducks and geese. He has about a dozen Rhode Island Red hens and a Rooster that he gets eggs from, and the rest are just "pets".
We visited my parents earlier this year and my boys had a great time helping grandpa tend to his flock and pick up eggs. The seed was planted and we've been casually gathering information on everything from breed specifics, to our local zoning laws ever since.
I decided it was time to get more serious about the idea in the last couple weeks, (which is how an internet search led me here) and I'd like to start participating in the forums so that I can ask questions and learn.
Thanks again for all the great information and great site!
Dave.
