Hi I am a very new BYC person. I am in the process of planning out my coop. Our law allows a total of 10 chickens but I plan on just starting with 4. I want to build a coop that will fit the max number of chickens we can own but so confused on how to go about it. I at first was going to buy a coop kit from the net but alot of them do not state how many chickens it will hold or are too expensive.
Then I thought about making my own but again not sure what size I will be needing. Any help on building would perfect for this number would be great or a good company to order a kit from that is not expensive.

i believe the sizing is no less then 2 feet spacing per adult chicken and no less than 1 foot above per adult chicken so they have room to stretch their wings a bit and lay eggs comfortably. good luck and take pics :D

Each chicken will need 4 to 5 square feet per bird in the coop, 10 square feet per bird in the run. So the more room you offer them the happier they are going to be.

@TwoCrows has given you some excellent information regarding coop construction. It's good to make it as large as you can, too much room is better than too little. Make it easy to clean and secure against predators. One thing I learned the hard way...make sure you can open the coop from the inside, as well as the outside, to prevent being "cooped up" yourself, lol.
