Hi everyone, I am new to chickens and am totally hooked. I started 9 babies on Oct 5th. I know, a late start but I just had to do it right then. They all have been very healthy and I am so in love with my chicks. I ended up with one rooster but decided I really like him. He is crowing away now for 3-4 weeks. I had my first egg on Sunday I was so pumped and now nothing since then. Is that normal? 8 hens and only one egg so far. They are still pretty young, only 18 weeks. I have been keeping a light on them for long days.
I have been perusing your forums now for a year and have learned so much from you all. I look forward to being an active participant.

Welcome to the forum. Yes that is normal egg laying behavior. Some breeds don't start laying until 26-30 weeks at the earliest. If your birds are from a hatchery, they may start to lay very soon, otherwise it could take longer for them to mature and start laying. Best of luck

form UT! Glad you joined us! That's pretty normal, I wouldn't be worried at this point. Just make sure she didn't find a secret hiding spot to lay her eggs.

Thanks for the input I did get egg number two today and it was a little bigger so must be the same gal. I have been checking all the corners in the coop just to make sure they weren't hiding. I can't believe how incredibly rewarding it feels to have these first eggs. My friends at work all tease me but I just love these chickens. TTo heck with those that don't get it.
