HI everybody! I have been reading BYC frequently for a couple of months (at least) and figured I should join the conversation!

(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
I've known I wanted to keep chickens for almost 20 years, ever since some friends in western Mass got theirs... a charming flock free-ranging in their woods. Living in city apartments made that impossible... until recently, when we moved out to our little acre on ramshackle hill! It's still against town regulations, but others on the street have chickens, so I hope we'll be OK.

(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
No chickens yet... I'm hoping to start some in fall when I have their housing figured out.

(3) What breeds do you have?
Still working that out... Buff O's, Australorps, Brahmas, Silkies? Looking for calm, friendly and quiet-ish birds as a high priority.

(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Many of my searches on chicken topics brought results from BYC. Looking forward to hearing some seasoned advice to my questions, if you all have time!

(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Getting overambitious with vegetable gardening; trying to tame the seriously overgrown landscaping at this place; quilting, crafting, reading, texas hold'em, DIY fails (mostly ;-), charcoal grilling.

(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
(Usually) happy to be out in the fresh air every day at work; no kids, but we have a couple nephews who wear us out now and then!
 
I like to err on the side the caution. I would get going on the coop and get some chicks or chickens now, while your neighbors have them too. If new laws would eliminate them they (and you) might be grandfathered IN. At the least you wouldn't be the only ones trying to overturn restrictions.

Thanks for the advice Drumstick Diva! Alas, laws are already on the books prohibiting chickens on less than 3 acres. :p I think you can pay a fee and apply to the town to MAYBE get a special exception, but that might be asking for trouble - I think I'll try to just stay under the radar.

Ironically, we can just about throw a rock into the next town, which has a more agricultural history and pigs, goats and up to 30 chickens are A-OK. Too bad we didn't have an extra $100K+ to buy a house on that side of the line!

This seems like it might be a 'live and let live' kind of neighborhood, though. A couple of people drive golf carts (illegal), a few houses down they have a relatively quiet (but still illegal) rooster, and supposedly somebody keeps a horse (for sure illegal.) And there are big biker parties a couple of times a year - still legal so far!

I guess as long as my next door neighbors don't mind, it's unlikely to be an issue. Wish me luck!
