Hello from Costa Rica

My guess (and it's just a guess) based upon @azygous's assessment and her current feathering is that she may have molted recently, got sunburned during the molt and now the skin is peeling but has to work through all those new beautiful feathers.

BTW, even though they call them meat birds, I suspect they're what we'd call a dual purpose heritage bird here. Which means they're basically good for eggs and meat. They won't lay as well as the hybrids, but they will lay longer. And if eye candy makes your day then you're definitely on the right track.

I used spray-on sunscreen on my hen, but she was completely bald on her back, no feathers at all. You would not need sunscreen on a chicken that has good feather covering protecting their skin from sun radiation.

We don't know for certain that sunburn is the reason for the peeling skin. But it's an obvious conclusion. If the peeling persists though the hen is now well feathered, of course we would need to search for another explanation.

Ah okay there is alot of molting happening right now - but I havent seen her back go bald - I guess the newer feathers offer less protection maybe?

Thanks so much for the responses

Shes not gone bald so Immat a loss at would could cause it. The sun makes alot of sense - the feathers are lighter I wonder if the rays penetrate - like I said earlier my dog needs a tshirt for sun protection and i even wear sunscreen indoors here in costa rica - the sun is no joke here - I could spray her under the feathers a bit with some sunscreen it wouldnt hurt - Maybe Ill bathe her and see if i cant work the rest off with a water/vinegar solution and a little bit of coconut oil....
