Hello from Cotopaxi, Colorado! (Elevation, 7700 ft)
My name is Nancy Kay Clark, and I'm in the planning phase for adding chickens to our family.
(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
This will be my first time owning chickens. I have interacted with friends' chickens, but have not owned any myself, so getting started is all a little overwhelming. I was a veterinary technician, but never worked with poultry and only worked with other birds in school.
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
I am planning to get about 6-8 chickens.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I know I love Buff Brahmas, so I want at least a few of them, but I'm interested in friendly, large chickens (I'm still researching). I like brown and colored eggs, but don't need them to lay every day. I won't be using them for meat.
(4) What are your favorite aspects of raising backyard chickens?
From what I've seen with my friends' chickens, I love their personalities. And, I definitely love fresh eggs from happy, healthy chickens. I currently get my eggs from my neighbor's free-ranging chickens.
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Taking care of my cats (2), horses (2), and husband (who is currently battling lymphoma). I enjoy gaming (tabletop mostly, but also some online and phone games), reading (lately, I've been reading a biography a month with a friend of mine), crochet and other crafts, and I love making pottery, but do not have access to a studio while we are isolating.
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
I retired early due to chronic pain and fatigue, but I worked in Animal Health for over a decade, before that I worked mostly in administration and customer service. I was the Study Participants Manager for the Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, a study that is following 3000 Golden Retrievers, over their lifetimes, in order to learn more about cancer in the breed. I live on 5 acres in a beautiful, mountain valley, with a 360 view of the southern Colorado mountains. I've wanted chickens since I moved here over a year and a half ago.
(7) Bonus: How did you find BYC, how long have you known about BYC, and what made you finally join our awesome community?
I found BYC through a search for groups on Facebook. I'm hoping to get some help from the community as I try to find and build the best setup for our needs (and affordable - I need sound, not fancy).
