Hello everyone my name is Dave and I am from Ct. My family and I just got our six chicks today. The coop construction starts this weekend. We are new to owning chickens but we have done our research and looking forward to raising our chicks into a healthy flock. I have a question concerning my coop. We have six chicks now and probably won't have more than that at any time. What is the best size for my coop? I have a design that I really like but just not too sure of the size. Thanks in advance for any input or advise anyone can offer.

Dave.....I'm in Bristol.

Around here most people recommend a minimum 4 sq ft per bird for a coop and 10 sq ft for a run. So your coop would need to be at least 24 sq ft. And that's open floor space, you don't want to skimp and pretend all the floor space taken up by feeders, nest boxes etc counts. Because this winter was so bad and my girls spent alot of time inside, I would be a bit generous in an area with bad winters, more like 4 1/2 per bird. Check out the coop pages, they're fun! And also the Connecticut thread, just search Connecticut and it will come up, you might find your neighbor's on BYC too!

My advice to anyone building a coop... build as big as you can ... you will have more than 6 in the future
