Me and my husband are very new to having back yard chickens but when we moved are great gran in (she needs help due to her health) she really missed the chickens on her neighbors farm. Since I have been doing my research I have fallen in love with bantam chickens myself! I will be getting my first chicks (bantam Easter eggers hens , molted cochin hens, and an assortment of silkies) in April ♡! Me and gran are super exited!
Luckily we have 2 acres of field land (used to be a corn field I believe) and have picked out a spot for me and hubby to build a nice big coop and run.
There this car port/corn shed structure we are cleaning out. The roofs are good on both sides but the middle will have to be replaced and the posts are large and cemented into the ground. In the end we will have a run that 8ft 8inches wide, 44ft 6inches long, and 6ft 8inches high. The coop will be 8ft 8inches wide, 6ft long, 3ft off the ground, and 3ft high. I want to have about 5 - 6 nest boxes and one whole wall hinges for easy cleaning and access to any eggs. It will have a nice tin roof over the whole thing and hardware cloth fencing (we have dogs, cats, and snakes out here), a 6inch skirt and cinder blocks on top. Inside will have two vegetable boxes and a dust box. For 9-15 chickens. Am I missing anything?
In addition to are chicks arriving we also have two ferrets, three guinea pigs, one love bird (my great gran's baby), one 20yr old cat, two small breed dogs, and a hound someone abandoned and I now feed.
As you can probably tell my family loves animals and I joined because I want to give my chickens a good happy life with us and make my gran's golden years as happy as I can. I will be very grateful to any advice I get and all lessons learned from you more seasoned chicken owners.
Sincerely,
Stephany Campbell

Hey there welcome. You'll find anything you need to know here.

Sounds like you've been planning things out carefully. Good planning is key, versus get chicks then figure it out(ok I might have done that once or twice).

I might pick your brain on your area some day. Lifelong northerner here who thinks she was born in the wrong place. Visited SC and GA recently and didn't want to come home.

Start a thread on you & your Gran's new adventure. I'd love to follow it. Lots of pictures of your coop build & Gran! And of course the new flock when you get them! We never get tired of pictures! And everyone is more than happy to help when they can.
