I'm Dave and I hail from Delaware, chicken capital of the world.

I started a back yard flock this spring with the intent to raise a few egg layers and maybe use them to work my garden via chicken tunnels. Chicken math has gotten the best of me, and instead of 6-7 egg layers, we currently have around 60 birds on our 3/4 acre, with more on the way.

Our current flock consists of
9 RIR 5 hens and 3 rooms
8 Golden Commets. 4 hens and 4 roos
26 Red Rangers
6 Muscocies Wk 4 for meat
6 Easter Eggers and 1 Fayumi I ended up with after a petting zoo at our kids school
5 Silkie/Cochins that are the kids pets

The Red Ranger and other Roo will be heading to freezer camp on labor day, if I get my chicken plucker finished by then. I did not get it done in time for my first round of cornish rocks, so I plucked them by hand. I also butchered them myself, after watching countless YouTube videos. My dad calls my home raised chicken Tube Steak

My goals in having a flock are to provide meat and eggs for my family as well as provide a wholesome activity I can enjoy with our 4 kids age 8 -2. My daughter loves her pet silkies and they are learning about the circle of life as the chicks enter our flock and end at our table. I want to buy an incubator to hatch our own chickens for next year's birds.

I am also putting the pieces together to start a New Hampshire breeding program. I have a line on some birds from a breeder in Pa. My goal is to use the culls from the program to fill my freezer and egg baskets. All the while developing my strain as a meat bird

BYC has been a valuable resource already and I look forward to meeting new people on here who can help me achieve my goals.
