Today I finally convinced my husband to have a chicken coop in our backyard. I would love some ideas and suggestions on when to get chickens (what time of year) and what breed for our Texas heat, as well as the best breed for my family (kid friendly).

The key is keeping them cool - we use a mister and ours are quite happy. But then - those are adult chickens too. baby chicks do just fine with a fan. In fact once it's dark we put a small lamp on ours. One of those little round silver clip ons you see in most workshops with a 40 watt bulb will do just fine.

Hi and :welcome

I was looking at a thread.

Leghorns seem to be a popular recommendation.
I live in Australia, we've kept sex links for years and they do okay in the heat.

Buff orpingtons are the most common friendly breed, but many other breeds will also be okay with kids.

As for time of year, a lot of people wait till spring. I suppose you can start any time you want though. We got chicks in winter one year. It was fine. As long as you can keep them warm!

I hope you find all the info you need here, and enjoy the site. :D
