Hi, all: I'm a busy, busy camper but decided to join this interesting forum. We live in Tweed, Ontario and have a small farm with a couple horses, almost 50 sheep, 4 Royal Palm turkeys and a mixed flock of Welsummers and 1 feisty little Americauna. Glad to be here!

Thanks to all you friendly folk. I'll be meeting a local chicken mom on Sunday to pick up a batch of Welsummer day-olds, so this afternoon I'm throwing hay around in the barn for the sheep and then building a chick nursery.

Hi there!
I live N or Toronto in N Durham Region. I only have 3 sheep.... well, 5 counting the gals we had born last thurs.

Could you answer a queston for me? One of the babies has what appears to be a 'cold' in its eye. A bit swolen and leaking fluid. We've been putting eye drops in from the pharmacy (not vet perscribed). Should I call the vet? Or give penecillin shots?

Thanks in advance

Angie J

Hi, try the Maryland Small Ruminant website for a wealth of info on sheep & goats. Locally, we can get from the Co-op a treatment for mastitis called Special Formula which is penicillin based. I am not a vet, but I can also buy this from my vet who knows I use it on sheep. One little drop in both eyes, then breathe easy for 3 days then repeat if necessary. Also check the mother's wool around her udder and consider 'crutching' which is local shearing to reduce bacterial crud contacting the babies eyes. All the best!
