This is day 2 of being a chicken owner. We had been researching (BYC and other sites) and decided to make the move. We picked up 3 Golden Comets yesterday that are about 18 weeks old. The lady we bought them from said they should be ready to start laying in a couple of weeks.

I built a 3' x 8' chicken tractor for them and they seem to like it quite well. The wired portion is 6' long and the covered portion with a nesting area is 2' long. They were living in a pen so they're use to the wire. Right now they're free ranging behind my shed working over an old compost pile. It's nice to have help with the yard work.

We're not planning to have more than 3 hens, and don't plan on any roosters. There was an unfriendly chicken ordinance passed in our county this year and a rooster would surely get us in trouble. I don't think there will be any neighbor problems with 3 hens that are kept in the back yard. Our main goal with the chickens is to produce our own eggs and let them do their natural work at insect control and fertilizing our yard and garden.

Thanks for having us.

Kevin

Welcome. Also have some Golden Comets born in March along with some Partridge Rocks and Amberlinks, but we got them about 3 weeks. 8 total.
Welcome and good luck!
