I am new to chickens and this forum. I started off by buying 10 chicks from the swapmeet. I thought a chick was a chick and boy was I in for a rude awaking. I ended up with 4 hens and 6 roosters. I took back 4 roosters and got 4 chicks back but they did not make it. I built a coop for them and that measures 8 deep 6 tall and 10 wide. The hens stated laying eggs and then I found out that they are RIR and mine wont lay on them. Sooooooo I researched and researched and found that orpingtons are great brooders. I then ordered 5 orpingtons and last thursday I got the phone call from the post office for me to come and pick them up. My wife tells me to call her after I pick them up and let her know if they are alive (she is as new to this as me). Soooooo I pick them up and open the box and low and behold I have 22 chicks. Now the hard part is telling my wife that we have 22 new additions. I bring them home and my 13 year old looks at me and just rolls her eyes at me and procedes to tease me. Then she saw them and starts naming them. Now I get to build another coop. Well this is my story and I am glad to be apart of the BYC group.
